At Cosmos Working Dogs, we embrace a balanced approach to dog training. But what does that mean? Balanced dog training combines positive reinforcement for desired behaviors with humane corrections for unwanted behaviors. For example, we might reward a dog with a treat or praise when they follow a command correctly, and provide a gentle correction, like a leash pop or withholding the treat, when they don’t.
This method is similar to how we guide children—encouraging good behavior with rewards and teaching boundaries with firm but fair corrections. Contrary to outdated beliefs, balanced training is not about harsh punishments or causing discomfort. Instead, it's about clear communication and consistency. A correction, such as a gentle leash pop, is simply a way to signal “Don’t do that,” not to instill fear or cause pain.
At CWD, our goal is to teach dogs to work out of love and trust, not fear. We believe that dogs thrive when they understand both what is expected of them and what behaviors are unacceptable, making our training both effective and compassionate.
Our training is customized to each dog, taking into account their unique personality and specific needs. Recognizing what works best for them is key to ensuring their success.
Training dogs in the environments where they will ultimately work is a crucial aspect of effective training for any working dog. At Cosmos Working Dogs, we ensure our dogs are trained not only in the specific settings where they’ll perform their duties but also in the home environment, ensuring they’re well-prepared for all aspects of their role.
